
Some small colleges face serious decisions about their viability, and it seems like the news is peppered with announcements of their demise.
Just this month, Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, announced it would not enroll next year’s freshman class as they begin to look for a “strategic partner.” Green Mountain College, a hands-on, environmental school in Vermont, will close at the end of this spring’s semester.
And this past year, Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA, shut its doors, and Wheelock College in Boston merged with Boston University’s Department of Education. These are hard times for the small schools, and Rick Seltzer’s article on their numerous closings is a sad but good read:
